Am off to Rome in April for my birthday, am absolutely mind bogled with all the hotels to choose from, have asked friends etc, some say its really compact so it doesnt matter which area you stay in, some say, don't stay there its miles away from everywhere. So am completely confused now, can anybody tell me the best area to stay to be fairly central to all the sights, don't mind a bit of walking, like a bit of luxury where the hotel is concerned, money not really an issue (gosh that sounds pompous) sorry ! Thank you

We stayed in this hotel last June. Very nice, rooms a little small, but hey, you only need somewhere to sleep don't you? Very close to the Vatican, and about a 10 minute walk to a Metro station for the Spanish Steps, Trevi Fountain, Coliseum, etc.

Have a great time!

This is a lovely 4 star just off the Piazza Navonna in a pretty area. It's a really nice hotel furnished with antiques and very, very central.

http://www.albergosantachiara.com/ This is a hotel I have stayed in just behing the Pantheon. Wonderful position and fantastic to come out in the morning and sit having a coffee facing the Pantheon. Also very central.

The beauty of both hotels is that they are right in the centre and you can walk to everywhere and also get back easily and take a break during the day to rest a little or change shoes - Rome is beautiful but can be exhausting and it is great to go out in the morning - come back for a siesta - then out again & back to change for the evening. If your hotel is further out you tend to have to stay out all day.

Thanks very much, just needed to hear something from someone who's been there and knows what they're talking about, funnily enough was looking at the Raphael last night and thought it looked nice. Thanks again you two.
Two of my favourite things in Rome are:

Getting a newspaper & a coffee in the Piazza Navona and just sitting & watching the action - great place with its Bernini fountain in the centre.

The Castel Saint Angelo near to the Vatican. A wonderful fortress with a miniature palace inside - where the Popes hid out when Rome was under seige. I love it! Such a big strong fortress but with lovely smallish painted rooms inside.inside. They have outdoor concerts there also.
Dont stay in the Emona Acqueductus Hotel please!!!!
