they're not too keen on pepper. you could sprinkle some on the furniture....or...get a cat scratcher.
get one with the hanging balls on. (sorry that sounds rude)
my cat loved his and alas no more threads hanging off the sofa etc.
all the best
I got something from the vets called Felaway (?? spelling?) - it is a spray that you spray on the furniture where the cats scratch. It worked really well with my cats except for the bottom of the stairs where they will keep scratch. I am happy tho as at least it is not my sofa and confined only to one place!
depending where they are scratching, you can put some tinfoil or bubble wrap where they are scratching as they dont like the sound. also we are having a prob at the moment where a couple of our cats keep jumping at the bird cage so we bought a sound thing that stops them going near the cage. you are supossed to use it near bird tables outside, but we use it indoors and it works. when they go near the area it sets off a sound that stops them going near it, and its not cruel.
Have read they don't like Febreze.
