Hi, Bubba28.
I had a cat that did very much the same, had no idea on how to stop him,so i experimented with Bubble Wrap on the surface, which he didn`t like the sound of the popping.
It solved the problem,so it,s worth a try.
I`m pleased to say he didn`t leave home.
Good Luck. Flookes.
I was interested to see if anyone could come up with any anti scratching ideas for our kitten Milly. She tries to have a go at the arm chairs, but we keep gently shooing her off!

Trouble is, she loves bubble wrap! She plays with it & snuggles up to go to sleep on it!

You can't win!
Hi bubba, havent tried this myself but ive heard that if you put something reflective(like tin foil)on the surface,he will think its another cat and shy away.

Hi Bubba,
Try rubbing the posts with lemon soap or orange peel, it worked on my cats.
Sticky strips - they don't like their paws sticking to things.
