any tips for stopping a cat scratching? She belongs to my housemate and usually sleeps on her bed.  The cat has fallen in love with me and every time I sit down she jumps up for a cuddle. Which is lovely, but I don't like having her in my room at night and at the moment my housemate is away for a while, and she ends up scratching outside my door in the middle of the night.  any ideas for stopping it? (And don't say to let her in!!)

You can buy spray deterrent to stop them scratching, but in the meantime sprinkle some pepper on the carpet and that should stop her. Poor little thing though, she's missing her mum and she sees you as a good stand-in!
Putting something sticky on the door will stop the cat scratching!

Thanks for your suggestions.  She definitely is missing her mum, but we do have plenty of cuddles during the day and i always let her in when I wake up so she can come in and laze on me for a while!  The main reason I don't let her in is that I only have a single bed (as opposed to my housemate's double) and I'm also prone to night terrors - I think that having a kitty jumping on and off would really set me off!

Last night I left an upturned plastic laundry basket right outside the door, that seemed to deter her, or at least got her far enough away from the door so I didn't wake up!

Don't quite know if would help morg, but what about her mum leaving an item of her clothing outside her own bedroom door.  Perhaps moggy would be able to smell mum on it and settle down to sleep on it?

For some reason cats hate the smell of citrus.

try putting fresh orange peel by you door every night. It worked for me when my cats kept trying to climb the Xmas tree.
