I live in thenorth east of England and every evening at 8pm flocks of geese fly over towards the north. Then every monring at around 7am they fly back towards the south. Why is this? And also, why do they honk when it must use up a lot of their energy?

They will be flying off to Roost. They like to roost out in the middle of the water on an island if possible to avoid predation.
During the day they will be grazing on fields on the mainland.
Whereabouts in the NE are you? Northumberland I presume?

We've got them in Guildford, about 3 hundred of them come over to a corn field near me every night for about 6 weeks, during the day they go to a big local pond, I see them most nights it's an amazing sight!
