Question about geese

Somebody told me something quite interesting about geese, and I was hoping that someone could tell me if it's myth or fact. My friend claims that when a flock of geese are flying in a V formation, and one of them is shot down or falls, 2 of their flock will follow them down to the ground, where they will wait to them until they either recover or die, then return to the flock. Is it true?

My first thought on reading this was that it was just another of the urban myths that do the arounds, but... I've found at least half a dozen bonafide sites that back this up, so strange as it sounds it seems it could be true.
