Smelly house!

I'm buying a house which has been very neglected. The price is right and it's got lots of potential, but the last owner let his dogs run wild in it (dogs mess everywhere) and left meat in the freezer with the electricity off for 3 months. So as well as being filthy, it reeks to high heaven. Obviously cleaning will help, but has anyone got any other suggestions how I can get rid of the smell?

Open all the windows upstairs, leave all the interior doors open, lift all carpets, lino etc, and don't go back in for about a week, this time of year it will make such a big difference, good luck, Ray
Amazing how some people live!

Apart from Ray's helpful suggestion, once you've given everywhere a really good scrub & clean, you could always buy some burning oils or incense sticks, which will help make the house smell pleasant. There are also some good electrical plug in air fresheners on the market.

In the meantime, perhaps this info will help:

I meant to say the first paragraph in that link may help you.
Dump the carpets too as we have bought something similar and the carpets were riddled with flea casings -spray treatments and cleaning would have been more expensive than room remnants placed in as huge rugs.
