Birds singing at night

Don't know if anyone else has heard this, but last night my OH and i heard birdsong and it was 11.30pm! it went on til we went to bed in the early hours...never heard this before. Does anyone know what makes them sing in the dark or have i just not noticed it before....?

Starlings in a group often don't settle down at night, especially when their roost is near to street lighting.

I think YvonneM is right.

Robins will sing at night generally under a street lamp or some other light in order to attract females.
Its a lovely tuneful song. I hear it a lot where I live. Baffled me for ages.
i agree with all of the above but also because of the mild winter we are having and the autumns going to be arriving early, believe or not but birds and flowers (daffodiles are starting to sprout now some are even blossoming) are confused as to what actual season we are in. this will become more re-occuring as the years go on.
