Who else is sick of it? Where i work seems to be full of it.. I have worked there for just over 10 months & am rarely put on tills, usually get stuck in the fitting room for over an hour at a time or clearing rail, i have worked in 3 other shops before this so am not incapable of working in the retail industry. I am 18 years old, and yet why is it that 16 year olds who haven't worked in another shop before & only been working there for a few months tops are taught how to do refunds & get put in charge of sorting things out because the manager is "sick of only seeing her being put in the fitting room".
It annoys me so much, & it also gets to me how the older people in work are treated better & are given more responsibility even though they have been working there for less time.
okay rant over..

ha, I quit my job (worked in entertainment in a highstreet stationers) when my manager started employing new people, younger than me and put them on entertainment.. (where I had been trained)... and put me on the tills DOWNSTAIRS to serve miserable teens trying to get fags in their school uniform, and perverts wanting to buy the daily star. When I told my manager I wasn't happy she said she wanted me downstairs to attract more customers into the store.. because the new staff weren't very chatty... well bye bye to them!!
So how have you spoken to anyone about this? Can you make these comment presuming they don't like you? Why don't they like you? Should you look at your attitude?

So many questions - really can't give an answer - goodness - you are 18 and seem to get the knowledge that workplaces can be hard !

Well they can be hard!

Not a rant !! I can see your problem - but talk to your manager.
Loukr - miserable teens and perverts - for goodness sake - no matter what they were - they were CUSTOMERS !!! Attitude problems are rife these days and I'm afraid you have got one !

Trust me Scotman84 everyone where i work has a problem with the manager but we all know that if we try go to head office or anything about it our life there will be made hell..
She takes god knows how many breaks in a day goes for hair appointments during work, and soo many holidays its unbelievable. some days she'll just go "oh i think ill go to france next week".
But low & Behold anyone to try & book their holidays or try sort out swapping shifts round.
I gave her about 2-3 weeks notice saying that i could not work until 6:30 on i think it was 3 days but could work any other time during that day and apparently that wasn't enough notice for her?! Even though the rota's hadn't been done.
I have asked if i can have set days & apparently she doesnt think she can do that for me yet nearly everyone else there she can sort it out for!

I have asked to be taught how to do refunds quite a few times, but it hasn't happened yet.

i wish i could talk to her, but last time when i went in to her office to tell her about the days that i couldnt work till 6:30 on she just laughed at me & was talking to me like i was an idiot.

sorry if that was a rant, not meant to be. Its just annoying to work somewhere you get treat like a child.
Missjeff - I know that there are managers out there who are total w*nkers but if head office are being taken in by them then there is little you can do - wish you well hun - do you watch 'the office'?
Question Author
They just think she's one of the best managers because everyones too scared to say how many breaks she takes and such like..

Yeah i love 'the office', oh how i'd love to have Gareth Keenan as a work colleague..
excuse me... but i do not have an attitude problem!! I was just giving my opinion on what missjef said... it might sound ridiculous, but I was specifically trained to work in entertainment and had worked there for 2 years, then I was made to put thesuppliments in papers in the morning, and serve fags... you're not supposed to work your way down in a job are you.

loukr i know what you mean about perverts & the like, i know i know i know THEY are still customers, but it does kind of creep me out when a 70 year old man comes in every night to stroke the footwear & lingerie (nothing else!) & always purchases 'sexy lingerie' & tells us its for his stepdaughter. Just find it a little too weird really. He sometimes comes in with an empty wheel chair aswell.
And tries to chat up the employees..
erm... ew!
Hi Missjef,

maybe you need to keep a workplace diary... and when you next confront your manager do so in writing .. and request a written reply.. ... they should induct all staff to the same level of competance to deal with customers.

Awww hon :( If you're tried all sorts then maybe think about starting to look for another job?

I know you shouldn't have to but you may find yourself somewhere else which is so much how you want it to be and leave you wondering why you didn't do it sooner.

I really hope it works out for you xxx
My daughter has had a problerm at work with her manager being aggressive, abusive and generally lacking in people skills, 3 staff all resigned at the same time, my daughter submitted a formal written grievance to the HR department and the manager is now being investigated and will likely be moved and demoted. There are laws against bullying in the workplace and it can take many forms.
I find that myself and the other people who work part time are given all the horrible jobs and have to time our teabreak to the second whereas the full time employees are given the best jobs and have at least 10 minutes more than their teabreak without anything being said. Also the management are much more relaxed with the full time employees having sick leave. Just because we work part time doesnt mean we are lesser employees than the full time staff.
Favouritism is unfair but it happens in lots of work situations. The only way to address it is to be assertive. Easier said than done but a skill that lots of people (managers included) could benefit from.
Sometimes it can appear that everyone is being given better opportunities but, we only see it from where were standing. Things change, jobs, people, takeovers, etc so although it can be crappy, knowing that "change is coming" could help how you view it. There are lots of retail shops with good managers so if it doesn't work out perhaps a change is on the cards. Wish you well.
I sense discontent amongst the proletariat. Yes! The Revolution is coming!
