not sure where the phrase originates but saw this question asked on tv - they said it meant to go to war in one form or another
It's a Mafia phrase - you hear it in 'The Godfather' and it means that gang war has broken out between Families. the phrase comes from the habit of warring gangsters to set up temporary hedqwuarters in a cheap or abandoned building, to keep the fighting away from their homes and families. These places were unfurnished, except for matrasses, which they wouod sleep on in the lulls between blwoing each others' brains out. The phrase has now come to mean 'going to war' for gangs.
Yes andy, that is what jenky said. But longer.
It is, but there was no explanation of why the matresses came into the phrase, which I did explain a little more fully. From my experience, adding to other answers is standard practice on this site, sorry of that presents a problem for you.
Not at all. In fact that's exactly what I did. Apologies to aloha489 for getting a notification with each crashing blow from mine or andy hughes' handbag. I am off to tuck my blanks into my blanks. I'm too hungover for this. Have we gone to the mattress yet?
