The cop shows show chases of stolen etc. cars at 100 - 140+ mph.

Slould UK private registered cars be mechanically/electronically limited to (say) 80 mph?

I've sometimes wondered. The upper limit shouldn't be the speed limit, drivers will sometimes need to accelerate out of trouble.

It looks as though new European cars will shortly have them and the UK will accept them

If you had to drive a speed limited vehicle for any length of time you might be able to answer your own question.

I could be wrong but I think the cops someimes enjoy the adreneline rush they get from high speed chases. 80mph would bore them.

Question Author

doug - is there ANY need to drive at more thah 80 mph on UK roads?

I don't think so. I agree with jno: sometimes a driver might have to accelerate out of trouble.

Question Author

you could have as much acceleration as you want - provided it stops at 80 mph!

I guess not, dave, but then there's no 'need' for different makes and models of vehicle if it's just a matter of all getting from a to b either.

And of course it would create a new market for proper cars as exist now with the resulting profits for the usual suspects.

I can't see it happening any time soon.

Question Author

I agree doug - take it out of the lifestyle/aspirations agenda & call it what it is - transport.

yes, I would have thought 80mph would be enough for an absolute limit, if the standard limit is 70.

Of course police cars would have to be faster or nobody would get caught in a chase so we've already gone full circle and can dismiss the motion. 😄

Question Author

I did say "private" cars doug. Of course emergengy vehicles could go faster.

Like the Lada of yore, it's a non-starter.

Of course the baddies would find a way to override the speed limiter and even people who find the likes of Clarkson wonderful would be getting info from the internet to override it too.

Question Author

With a stolen car the "baddies" wouldn't have suficient time to do intricate mods to the control systems & I'm pretty sure they could be made tamper proof if the will was there.

Cars are controlled completely by software nowadays; it would take moments to plug a laptop into the car's computer socket and modify the engine control system.

Question Author

if it's so sophisticated such interference could be prevented

Wait and see.

Question Author

I won't hold my breath - what with the motor fanatic lobbyists & the adreneline addicted cop chasers I don't see it happening. Sadly.😥
