"Totting up sales figures from last week, Sunil made a third plus a sixth of the sales achieved by Isaac, who made six more sales than Kay , whose sales totalled five times a third of Sunil's.

If Jasper's sales brought the foursome's average to 27, what was the highest individual total of sales"

TIA

I make it Isaac 36, Sunil 18, Kay 30 and Jasper 24.

Highest is Isaac at 36.

I can give you the working if you need to know it.

interesting yes please. hopefully its not remainder theorem!

Using the intial letter of each person to represent the number of sales they made, so S = Sunil etc:

S= (1/3+1/6)*I = I/2

I= K+6 = 5*I/6 +6

6I = 5I+36

I=36

S=I/2 = 18

K=5S/3 = 30

I+S+K = 84

Average = 27, therefore total sales = 27*4 = 108

and Jasper makes 108-84 = 24 sales.

Many thanks

"Sunil made a third plus a sixth of the sales achieved by Isaac..."

Is that not a third of the total sales plus a sixth of Isaac's sales?

I treated as (1/3 + 1/6) of Isaac's sales - just a complicated way of saying 1/2. Perhaps the question is not defined clearly enough.

Any other ideas?

If you prefer TCL's interpretation of the question use S=(4*27)/3 + I/6

ie, S=36+I/6.

Other equations are unchanged and repeat the calculation.
