"He said that would amount to about 10 million tree seedings being ripped up and burnt with perhaps the same happening again next year if the funding allocation remains the same." - why? why can't they be left to grow? Is this just a hissy fit?

These ones aren't, nicebloke.

When the government encourages a business to do x instead of y for a guaranteed income y is stopped and the income from that lost.  Depending on the nature of the business it could need a lot of money to re-start y and maybe years before it generates a profit.

The business does not have the facilities to do x and y.

If the government then withdrew the financial incentive for doing x the business faces collapse.

I can fully understand his anger and frustration.

Nicebloke 11.45  Blue spruce trees  ???

If the land is not suited for arable farming then it's unclear what is to gain from making the effort to pull it all up. Can he farm animals there instead ? If so is there enough income from that to make the cost of burning worthwhile ?

// to make the cost of burning worthwhile ?//

cost of a match?

They cant afford the funding so  how much does it cost to dig up and dispose of 10 million tree seedlings, maybe next year as well.

//Yes, a trifle ironic that he wants to burn them given his alleged concern about climate change 😁.//

It's not unusual for farmers to burn fields after harvesting a crop.  This one just won't be harvested because it has nowhere to go.

Doesn't he also need to make room for the next batch of seedlings to be planted? I sympathise with him because a potentially useful crop has to be wasted.

Personally I'd keep the trees and burn the politicians.

Bloody useless over-promoted town councillors.

Burning isn't just applying a match though, is it. The initial burn needs management/control. Then burning the shoots of existing trees doesn't guarantee they or their seeds won't spring up through the pasture again. It's going to be a right 'pain in the neck'.

He's been promised a load of money from someone to plant trees on his land.

He's gone and done it and then they've said sorry, changed our mind. Don't want them trees any more.

The lawyers will sort it.
