In Hinduism, the right-facing symbol (clockwise) is called swastika, symbolizing surya ('sun'), prosperity and good luck, while the left-facing symbol (counter-clockwise) is called sauvastika, symbolising night or tantric aspects of Kali.

That symbol is ancient and is used in many cultures - the nazis adopted it.  In Hindu it symbolises prosperity  and good luck and represents the sun.

yes the swastika is not a nazi invention.

I've not read Barry's link, but it was also used by native American tribes, including the Navajo.

At the end of the Strand (London) lies Aldwych where the Indian Embassy and Broadcasting House reposes there is a frieze in relief with the swastika moulded thereon amongst other things.

Very interesting, thanks all.

I am told there is a swastika on one of the memorials in Tewkesbury Abbey.Wasn't able to find it myself, but it was around hundreds of years before the Nazis nicked it

Doesn't it depend on which way round it is ?
