Not necessarily a detective as the prime character, could be the pathologist, the serial killer or anyone involved in a long running crime series.

Must be British, though, and I don't mind if they are brutally gory or not.

Although I can't remember the author, Cadfael, is a brilliant series to read. Set in medieval England. He is a monk, but if memory serves me well was also in The Crusades.

Ellie Griffiths has also written a few books featuring a detective called Harbinder Kaur.  I haven't read any yet but they have been recommended by a friend.

sorry misread your post x

I've read all the Quintin Jardine "Skinner" series.  Started with the first one and followed on as the characters develop with each new book.
