Not necessarily a detective as the prime character, could be the pathologist, the serial killer or anyone involved in a long running crime series.

Must be British, though, and I don't mind if they are brutally gory or not.

Thank you

Thanks, bednobs, I read all of the Wimsey some years ago but will certainly try the other two.

are you the sort of person who can read things more than once?

also mean tto add the thursday murder club series

Question Author

I can read books more than once.  I've read some very bad reviews about The Thursday Murder Club series but have the first one reserved at my local library (ebook format).

I like TTMC but it does seem to get a slagging from certain quarters, Naomi for example! I enjoyed the stories.

Can't beat Sir Ian Rankin's Rebus series for me (Murraymints will back me up). Think they are on about 18 in the series and read in order they are fascinating.

Question Author

Rebus is one of my favourite series, read them all at least once.

The Jack Frost series

I didn't finish The Thursday Murder Club.  Very poorly written.

I'm just making a start on Edward Marston's books.  (I came across a boxed set in a charity shop).  They seem to be very promising:

I'm reading the series by Peter James, the detective is inspector grace. The books are better than the tv series

I can recommend the DI Ridpath series by M J Lee.

Val mcdermid has also written a few series, my favourite is the tony hill/carol Jordan series

I'll second the Slow Horses series of books. All about a band of MI5 cast-offs overseen by the not-so-friendly, chain-smoking, flatulent Jackson Lamb.

Lots of laugh-out-loud moments mingled - with the serious side of keeping the country safe - within the pages and now a tv series - season 3 due to be released on Dec 1st - starring Gary Oldman as Lamb, and boy does he play the part well.

Anything by Kate Atkinson, particularly the Jackson Brodie series.

Question Author

I've read all of the Frost books (including those written by Danny Miller and James Henry); Ann Cleeves; Peter James; Val McDermid; Angela Marsons; Tess Gerritsen; Peter Turnbull; Priscilla Masters and some Kate Atkinson.

And Ruth Rendell.

I'm looking forward to trying the recommendations :)
