I was trying to be clever (?) & make the connection between M.Thatcher & Churchill - the "they" in the OP,

'cos Winston Churchill one said, " Ending a sentence with a preposition is something up with which I will not put." :0)

I thought you were being the caretaker bloke out of Dinnerladies, or maybe Yoda from Star Wars.

I know TTT ( bless him!) does a wee in his pants when I mention grammar....
BUT
" I put it up" - as in " Ay pitched a tent"
up is used as an adverb
