I have received an email from (supposedly) PayPal saying that I have sent a friend 1p ? I haven’t obviously. Before I go through the faff of ringing PayPal does anyone have any suggestions as to what this could mean? I suspect some sort of scam…….

Why not log on to your paypal account and look at the recent transactions.

If it is some type of scam, I would suspect that there is a link in the e-mail to take you to the fraudster’s website and ask you to input your paypal password.
Hymie has posted exactly what I was thinking.
It's probably a fake email with a link that will take you to a fake site, where you'll be asked to log on .... you're effectively giving the fraudsters your log-in details.
As Hymie said, log onto PayPal, making sure that it is the genuine PayPal website and check your account. If the 1p transaction isn't there, just ignore the email and move on.
Did it name the friend ?

Isn't that sort of amount used to check payment can be made later ?
scam definitely
