I got my expanding hose out for summer watering, and the connection where the head screws onto the hose is shooting water everywhere.

I have unscrewed and rescrewed several times, no joy.

It was water tight last year - any idea what may have changed, and how I can fix it?

Try putting some PTFE tape around the thread of the tap.
Wrap it around the thread a few times and make sure to wrap it in the same direction as the thread. So wrap it round in the same direction as if your were fastening the hose to the tap - this stops it unravelling when you screw the hose on.

I didn't realise it was so cheap, you can get some from Screwfix for 31p:

Sounds like the 'o' ring may have perished (small black rubber ring).
Rubber washer has dried up and died due to little use over the year.
Put a new washer in it.
