Where individual who was American said they wash and scrub their eggs and in some instances wash with bleach.
Why?
The most I have ever done is wipe over with a damp cloth and that is there is loose much on them.

Maybe it was just a fussy person. I once knew someone who peeled their mushrooms.
I suppose in case there are traces of chicken poo, when you consider what rubbish they are portrayed as eating you do wonder why they bother
Not sure why anyone would do that. Do they eat the shell or something?

My mother peeled mushrooms Atheist - no me neither.
In the US, eggs are washed/cleaned before being packed...it's something they do ( and why their eggs need refrigeration in store).
In the same way, they also over-chlorinate their water supplies - because they think it's better practice.

You big fuss-pot!
Amazing, they legally manufacture working firearms for kids, but have to wash their eggshells. Defies belief.
I buy very few eggs and those that I do are usually covered in chocolate.

Thanks all very interesting
You are right, no need to wash and scrub them as we eat the insides and not the shell.
Thanks for the chuckle Susan, I really needed it right now.
If a person from any other country has said it I may have thought that there might be something to it.

But anything from the US is suspect!

Dizmo, chocolate is good for you :-)
I certainly don't wash mine unless sometimes they're pretty mucky (a friend has free-range rescue hens) in which case I give them a wipe.

I also just wipe mushrooms (if you peel a chestnut mushroom it loses most of its flavour) but I do trim the bottoms off the stems. That's because when I was a child, they were grown in horse manure - our local riding stables did a roaring trade. :)
I don’t wash, scrub or peel any veg or fruit, or eggs.
The only time I would wash or scrub veg is if it was straight out of the ground and covered in soil.
And I’ve lived to tell the tale ;)
Like gingebee says. Here's more info. I can't remember ever washing them though...maybe it's a recent thing
