Yes, I know a smartphone or tablet can be used as a satnav but my luddite relative wants a traditional stand-alone sat nav such as TomTom or Garmin that is loaded with Google Maps. Does such a thing exist?

Alternatively, is it possible to download Google Maps to an old TomTom type satnav?

Oh and oh. Thank you
Garmin and TomTom use their own maps but they can be configured in several ways. Why must it be google map format?

He wants to plot his routes on Google maps on his pc and 'magic' them to the satnav. He finds Google maps far easier to use on a pc than fiddle about with the settings on satnavs
As a delivery driver, a satnav usually is more accurate. Not always but mostly.
I use a TomTom website (mydrive) which allows me to set a route and then send it to my TomTom. I can let the website choose a route and then modify it by adding waypoints before sending it to the TomTom which is still in the car. Next time I go to the car the route is ready to be used. Mydrive can also access all my stored places/addresses that are stored on the TomTom.
Does he not have a smartphone?
Yes. I use a Garmin Satnav and it is good, it will even take you to shops or whatever. But, when i tried to update the maps on my computer it would not do it, but it is alright as routes do not change much.

Togo, that link for Tomtom doesn’t work for me. I do not have ‘send’ in the top right corner of Google maps
With google maps on screen you first need to click on the little blue arrow that says "directions" when you hover the cursor over it. It should be next to the grey search box top left. You then need to put in a route. I think that you also need the device plugged in or there is nowhere to "send" the info.

Yep, Tomtom connected and turned on, route selected in Google maps.

bhg, we have never been able to make My Drive work properly between pc and TomTom. Maybe I should give it another go
Updating a Gramin device can be a bit hit or miss, William.

The very first thing to do is make sure it's fully charged, I know not why but it's essential, second is persevere and you'll get a free update.
PS, Garmin have the same probs. :-)
When I need to update the built in Garmin for the motor. I need to use a usb flash drive plugged into the desktop and then take the flash drive out to the motor for the updates to load to the system. The usb flash drive needs to be formatted first. When Garmin was hacked a couple of years back I also did a full management system upgrade not knowing that Honda were doing them free.
barry - I have two TomToms and I can sent a route to both from my laptop. The TomTom is logged into my account; when I bring up MYdrive on my laptop it asks me to login. Once logged in the laptop can see all the saved things on my TomTom (favourite places, routes etc) and they are displayed on the map. I ask it to plot a route, modify it if required and then hit the "Send Destination/Send Stops" button. I get a message in the top RH corner of the map "Syncing Successful".
Next time I go out to the car the TomTom comes to life and, after a short time, I get a message "New destination received" and it plots a route. You have to have your TomTom logged in to your account and then log Mydrive in but it works every time for me. Because I have two TomToms the destination is sent to both.
