If a gun was given to another person and not through a gun store, they then commit suicide with it, what happens to the person who gave the gun? Do they prosecute?

It depends which country you are talking about but in most passing a weapon on to someone else is illegal unless done through the proper channels.
This is mainly a UK site although we do have some regular contributors from the US, but it is unlikely you will get information about this here
CAC - the US, Federal Firearms Licence
As has been said, this site is based in the UK (where even the vast majority of our police officers have no access to guns). So it's not the best place to ask about US gun laws. Your best chance of getting a meaningful answer might well be Quora: https://www.quora.com/
As ever, it depends on the facts.
Someone has committed suicide and the registration on the gun has....led back to you. Judge Judy might say

Do they prosecute? that depends on the story. If you gave the gun after he stated that he was gonna commit suicide, then it is possible that you will be indicted for assisting.

If he said, oh that is a nice gun can I see it, and when you showed him, he shot himself, then I dont think there is criminal liability

It seems sensible once the police come calling, to get a lawyer
