Any info please as in was it ok, did you stick to it , any problems with it? TIA.

My understanding is that the keto diet is basically just an over-hyped low-carb diet. You can find out what types of food you can, or can't eat, on such a diet here: https://www.healthline.com/nutrition/low-carb-diet-meal-plan-and-menu

This website has scoured social media to find some genuine reviews of the keto diet (rather than the countless fake ones that you can find on the web). I think they make interesting reading:
https://thethirty.whowhatwear.com/keto-diet-experiences

This, from the NHS website, might be relevant:

It's worth remembering also that the NHS has an 'official' weight loss plan, which might well be worth trying:

Thanks for the links Chris. The sites I've found so far, you have to pay to join and I was hoping to just find out which types of food I can eat and where to buy good quality food from i.e grass fed meat. Also, if it's a safe diet.
I will have a read of your links.
I can't seem to find these ketos in the shops at all.

Chris, I'm giving you BA for the healthline link as it seems to be what I was looking for. Thanks.
I've alternated between very low carb and keto for a good few years. I started with low carb about 10 years ago and lost 1.5 stone in 3 months, and have learnt a lot about the science behind it. I've also learned that when I eat what is considered a normal amount of carbs, I don't feel well. I have far more energy without them.
Keto is very low carb...usually 20 to 50 grams of carbs per day for weight loss. That means no bread, rice, pasta, cakes and other sweet foods. Fruit is also limited...natures candy as some might call it. Plenty of green leafy veg, berries, meat, fish, poultry, eggs, dairy...in other words...real unprocessed food. Some good fats...olive oil, butter, coconut oil, avocado, fatty fish like salmon or tuna. Buy what you can afford...it doesn't have to be grass-fed. Also, don't believe the hype about eating loads of fat...that's not true. Particularly for weight loss. ;)
Take a look at The Diet Doctor website...plenty of good advice, recipes, and science.
If you've come from eating a rubbish diet, expect the Keto Flu...feeling somewhat rubbish for a while. Often due to withdrawal from over salted foods. Add some lo salt to a bottle of water for missing electrolytes.
There are some knowledgeable writers about so you can read about it if you want. Gary Taubes comes to mind.
I have seen a few friends lose weight on the keto diet. I cant help but thinking it is unsustainable longterm and they'll pile it back until the next fad comes along (dukan, juicing, cabbage soup, they all work, but very few stay on them forever). Regular, consistent exercise and everything in moderation is probably a better recipe for longterm health.
It's a matter of finding what works for you. I was a carb addict and lived on rice, pasta, bread. What I do now works for me because I enjoy every morsel I eat, and don't miss what I don't* eat.

*take note, it's don't, not can't

I have been looking for a diet that is sustainable and I think I could do this one. The only problem I have is what do you substitute things with
The foods I would miss are bread, root veg and pasta.
I've made a list of foods and will make meals from them.
Thanks for all your answers.
I should have mentioned that both low carb and keto have been found to help both diabetics and those with pre-diabetes to normalised their blood sugar...thereby reducing or erasing the need for medication. One way to save the NHS some money.
Barsel - if you want to count everything - "MyfitnessPal." is excellent - ie if you are genuinely want to lose weight LOL
My sister has started the keto diet, again!
She's done it on and off for the last couple of years. It definitely works, if you can stick at it. She said it can make some womens hair fall out, worryingly.
Question Author
Patsy, that sounds worrying.
Well I've managed to work out a menu that doesn't include the carbs I usually eat, but I will probably finish the food I already have in before I start on it.
Fingers crossed, I might just lose a bit of weight.
Good luck Barsel. Any questions, just ask.
