I'm new to laptops.Slowly getting used to the integral mouse, but haven't yet managed to succeed in dragging items to a specific place - they get halfway there and then go back to where they started from. There must be a technique I haven't mastered, I'd be grateful for advice.

You have to treat it like a normal mouse, to drag something click on it and keep you finger down and drag with your other finger on the pad, it gets easier with practice but I never use the laptop mouse, just get a proper USB mouse. You may have to increase the pointer sensitivity of you are running out of pad before your reach the target.
I always use a proper wireless mouse - much easier.

Thanks, both of you. Would you believe I didn't know I could use an ordinary mouse? Also getting used to Windows 10. It's going to be a long haul.
Wireless mouse every time for me too. I feel I have much more control.
Difficult to use a mouse when you are balancing the laptop on your knee on the bus, though - or anywhere else, so it is good to be able to properly the laptop's trackpad.
I do use a wireless mouse when I'm at home sat at a table or desk, though.

I have shaky hands and the touchpad used to drive me nuts. I don't think I ever got it to work properly.

I have a mouse plugged in now and I have disabled the touchpad so that if I nudged it by accident it wouldn't mess up what I was doing.
brilliant cartoon, Canary
I have a laptop - I never use a mouse. My husband has laptop and always uses a mouse. Horses for courses!
Ditto diddly, my wife uses the built-in mouse, I use an old-school plug-in and neither of us would swap.
