Does anyone remember him " the wonderous Notts & England batsman" ? I seem to remember him always having trouble with his trousers etc. In his new excellent book; 'Cricketing Lives', (Reaktion Books) it's author, Richard H. Thomas says one of the most apt descriptions of anyone I've ever heard;

"He had the perennial look of a man who had just realised he has got off the train at the wrong station with the wrong suitcase but has decided to make the best of it anyway".

Too good not to pass on :0)

I remember him & I like that description, ta Khandro :-)
Notable for his fielding as well as batting
He was a fidget at the crease, never stood still for long, I remember Geoff Boycott running him out in an England game at Trent Bridge, didn't go down too well with the home supporters!
great player, dropped to get Gatting into the team. He got hit on the head by Lillee, I think it was, and solemnly doffed his cap and bowed to the bowler.
Does anybody know if he ever dropped his bat? Lol

I think this was the look R.H. Thomas had in mind;

nothing malicious, just good fun.

(also apologies for my misplaced apostrophe )
Being described as "that bloody little pain in the árse" would normally be an insult but it's possibly not so when spoken by Dennis Lillee ;-)
^^^ That post would make more sense with the link!

A fantastic player and a character as well. One of the best cover fielders in the world in his day. Players like him made the game worth watching. I wonder how he would have fared with all these one day matches and 20-20's?
A true case of 'they don't make them like that any more'. He played for Matlock Cricket Club till he was 59 - he's 70 now.
A very competent player always fun to watch
He was fun to watch.
I remember him, he liked to fidget at the crease. He is a nice man, i met him at a dinner and he was as normal as anyone.
