The Japanese versions cos there actually scary unlike the American ones
If you can stand the subtitles, the Jap ones every time. The problem with the US remakes is they tend to dilute the horror so they are able to give the finished product a lower certificate i.e a 12 or 15. This is to get a wider audiance and sell more tickets at the box office, and more DVDs. As a consequence, US movies are often full of pointless humour that can, and does, ruin a good plot.
I like the japanese Ring because it was less "padded" than the american and din't need to fully explain itself and it has a creepier feel. But I preferred the Jap.American combo make of The Grudge. Great creepy feel.
i prefer the Japanese one better, the only thing that is offputting though are the English subtitles as your too busy reading them than looking at the screen. That is the only film that made me really frightened of looking in my rear view mirror driving home from the cinema. I thought that girl would be sitting in the back seat. ;(
