Priti Patel Is "Quite Clear"

Following the loss of details of over 400,000 peoples details by the Home Office I can imagine Patels response.
Even though criminals, Covid offenders and the like will now no longer be able to be prosecuted she will state.
"I have been quite clear. Clearly. I made it quite clear. It was made clear.
The PM has been quite clear. It's clear. Clear. Obviously it's clear".
And so on.
On the 5pm Downing Street this week I counted 11 clears!
The Police Superintendent picked up the flow and gave us 5 clears in a minute or so!
The only thing that's clear is that she is totally incapable of running any Department as shown by Immigration and Home Office.
It's clear someone else will be the scapegoat.

Hancock will no doubt state, "Of course". Repeatedly.

yes, I work in IT and cock ups do happen that's why we have back ups. I don't understand why they apparently do not.

Backups used to be a very manual job and we used to run them weekly, cycling tapes over 4 weekly periods with the oldest being kept in a fire-proof safe. As technology and software improved backups became automated and incremental backups became available, where any files altered were regularly copied to separate hardware, backups could be run quite frequently. Originally created to protect against faulty hardware they can also be used to reverse cock-ups.

So do I. Any computer manager with a brain should have regular backups for his system. It's his responsibility.

The one 'clear' thing about Patel is her annoyin' droppin' of the final 'g' of -ing words (as do many now on TV). Her first words at a press conference last year were: Welcome to Downin' Street. The whole nation is mournin'.

That, along with how chippy and defensive she is, makes her totally unwatchable and I have to change channels, lest I spontaneously combust.

I think when they say they're destroying records, they kind of have to mean it ... ie no backups.

So it becomes a problem if you destroy the wrong records.

Chances are, though, that there are backups and copies somewhere, e.g. in the security services, but that restoring them from where they are is a PR problem because they're not supposed to be there.

I can understand infrequently used data being lost, as deletion of a file will work it's way out of the backup system after a few weeks; the data in question must be used very frequently, so should still be available in backups.

There must be more to this. It's the PNC for gawds sake they must have back ups. My guess is that some process that deletes records must also delete all backups in order that the data does not exist. Probably for legal reasons. Sounds like the parameters for the delete were wrong and it wiped out data it shouldn't. Their process is probably flawed, it should delete the live records then confirm it is correct before deleting the backups. We have this sort of thing at work but it's a 2 stage process so we first delete the live records and then we await an audit decision before propagating that to the back ups.

What she appears to be quite clear on is her support for police misinterpretation of rules and subsequent overreaction to UK citizens behaving reasonably, and that she is powerless to deliver on promises regarding illegal immigrants. Can talk the talk, but...

The only records which were lost were ones which many privacy campaigners say should never be kept anyway. i.e. they included things like the DNA and fingerprints of people who'd been arrested but later released without charge.
