So what has really changed?

Pubs closed at 10pm (again)
Table service only (I think that’s how it was anyway?)
Weddings reduced to 15
Office workers to work from home if poss (which most were doing anyway).
Higher fines for non conforming individuals and businesses who allow that.

Have a missed something? To me not a lot has changed?

What's the alternative, though, teacake? What would you have done with social distancing, face coverings, lockdowns etc, that would have worked better, without trashing the economy?

We have already got the alternative.
Which is?
46 Thousand dead, economy in bits, and according to GMB this morning nurses leaving the NHS, and no track and trace, or productive testing.
46k and still counting.

Its all been said many times over pixie so pretty pointless repeating I think. But there's been to many blunder's, and very little done to correct those blunder's. Boris knows best? and he won't listen to anyone else or accept help. One area that really needs addressing right now is the total mess these private companies have made of the testing process, they've been paid millions of pounds to do a job and are failing on a daily basis, they've had more than enough time to get it up and running correctly. If you failed at your job for months on end, I'm sure you would lose your job .

That is rubbish, he has followed the advice of the scientists.
That neatly sidestepped the question, anyway...
^^ whatever
:-)))
13.08 pixie, may be if you think my sidestepping of questions is neatly done, I should join them all in number 10. :0)
Actually quite a bit has changed:

Work: People were being advised to return to work as little as ten days ago. That advice has now been reversed.

Shops: Staff must now wear face coverings.

Transport: Passengers in taxis must now wear face coverings.

Hospitality: Pubs, bars and restaurants must close at 10pm. Only table service is allowed. Staff must wear face coverings as must customers when not seated at a table.

Of all of these the 10pm pub and restaurant curfew is the most bizarre. I cannot see any difference between customers leaving a restaurant at 10pm or at midnight. All it will do is drive people to booking their tables earlier in the evening. I have already done this for Saturday - I usually book for 8pm, leaving around 10:30 to 11:00. So now I've changed that to 7pm, leaving between 9:30 and 10:00.

As far as pubs go, do they really think that Saturday night drinkers are going to leave the pub (where, in most of the establishments I use, anti-social distancing, hygiene and contact tracing are fairly well organised) at 10pm and simply toddle off home to bed? No they won't. They will almost certainly be tempted to "let's go back to mine and watch a film/the football/whatever" where no control will be in place at all. Yet another example of people who legislate having no idea how most of the population behaves.

Yeah I’m NOT a Tory fan ... however I think boris is doing the best he can... like politicians all over the world. My biggest criticism wld be that initially (back in March / April) he relied on the nations sense of responsibility (lacking!!) abd instead of appealing to people he should have made hard n fast RULES. Too
Many ignored them.

All that said though I personally am not sure the virus is “as” contagious nor as deadly as media wld have us believe. Yes ... it exists. Yes... it IS serious. But media seem to thrive on scaring the bee-jeebies out of us. My own husband is one of those that was told should be totally shielding (he is a blood cancer patient in remission). He isn’t shielding but IS being cautious and vigilant. Avoiding crowds, washing hands etc but otherwise carrying on with life. We’ve both worked throughout too (though if furlough hadve been offered to him he would have taken it Cos initially we were quite scared for his healthbut it wasn’t so it wld have been no pay for us)

The pub closure rule makes a lot of sense because Corona Virus only works night shifts. Anyway, ask regular pub goers what they will do about it and they'll tell you they will go and get sozzled earlier.
The govt should put everyone under house arrest. And I mean everyone.
If I'm put under house arrest does that mean I don't have to go and work at the hospital?
// He isn’t shielding but IS being cautious and vigilant. Avoiding crowds, washing hands etc but otherwise carrying on with life.//

Good on both of you, Eve. You've assessed the risk and made your own decisions. That is what I am advocating for everybody because continuing to jeopardise the economy, the health and the social fabric of the country in the current manner is utter madness.
Campbellking @20.52. yes. Of course. Everyone means everyone. State of Emergency; Martial Law; The Riot Act etc. Everyone. Including, well, everyone!
If one thinks, with regards to cov, that Boris is doing the best he can, then one can't be expecting much from him. He is taking the advice of some scientists while others are convinced to rein in their doubts. Consider the discussions and approval for HI at the start and how the voices were clearly gradually encouraged to drop it.

Boris appears to be so nervous of the virus that nearly killed him that he favours voices that give advice to the effect of, "Control the population as if this was a totalitarian state, make them go over the top trying to avoid the ultimately unavoidable", and spreading his fear to the nation so that they comply and agree. This is not science driven, it is a political decision.

He should concentrate on EU issues and pass pandemic responsibilities to someone less emotionally affected by the disease.
