I've just noticed a new icon on my PC (Windows 7) - a blue green swirl, which is apparently Microsoft Edge. I didn't install it! What is it do I need it, and why did it appear without me asking for it?!

i've been using the new edge browser for a few weeks now and i'm very impressed

Aelmpvw...I have been running Edge, and trialled Edge Beta as part of the insider programme from day 1. I even had Edge running when this site was running a beta system and reporting back to the tech honchos at hq about the performance or non performance as the case may have been. I have had no problems with it, certainly no more than Chrome manage to generate. The added bonus is that I am not tracked up hill and down dale by Edge like you are with Chrome. I am still thinking about having a go with one of the newer browsers that provide more privacy for my forays into the so shall me deah sites.( Like duck duck go for instance) but keeping the Edge browser for shopping and any uses whereby a web history can be useful.
Edge is a good browser.
I don’t use it tho as I dislike MS trying to force it on me.
Same goes for Skype and Bing
I should add that it’s handy if you have kids as integrates into MS’s security and safe browsing stuff
^^^ DuckDuckGo is a search engine, Togo, not a web browser.

If you're seeking a 'privacy browser', try Brave
https://brave.com/
Epic
https://www.epicbrowser.com/
Iridium
https://iridiumbrowser.de/
or, of course, Tor:
https://www.torproject.org/download/
Incidentally...Edge itself provides a very reasonable "In Private Window" option up there in the third menu(...3 dots)
Edge installed itself on both my W7 machines with an update. As I said earlier (17:23), I just went through the usual procedure for removing unwanted programs and it went. A pop-up from Microsoft asking why I didn't want it, so I told them I objected strongly to them installing software without my consent.
It may be worth Ichkeria knowing that if children naughtily try to use the "In Private" facility......they can't as long as activity reporting or web filtering is enabled through their family group. «« That is you Ich.
Yes I know.
Obviously all or most browsers have filtering and safety features but Edge is the easiest to use if you’re on Microsoft.
The private browsing option isn’t a lot of use if you’re monitoring sites visited :-)
Sorry Tg that was that you meant!
I kept mine as when I use the 4player, programmes only play properly on this browser.
