BBC2 at 9pm, looks very promising. Don't know the story i confess but the BBC are actually making decent dramas this autumn, winter.

i really enjoyed that, very sherlock i must say.....
brainiac, I have watched Spiral from the beginning and always enjoyed it.
Roban and Gilou will be gone by the look of it which is a pity but glad you say there will be a new series.
Watch most of the French and Swedish crime dramas.
Question Author
i have watched some scandi dramas and enjoyed them,
caught up with The Missing which was brilliant.
I despaired when the gruff detective met the young Jewish doctor - so cliched. However, the episode grew on me so i will watch further. Though how you can compare it to Peaky Blinders, PP, is baffling me a tad?
Question Author
you know i have never watched Peaky Blinders, one of these dark nights i might do a catch up.
//Psychiatry has not yet split from Neurology
the head o the medical school is based on fact - raving antisemite//

PP. He was shocking wasn't he ?
// Though how you can compare it to Peaky Blinders, PP, is baffling me a tad?//

rather easily actually - Vienny Blood is around 1895-1900 ( end of empire) and peaky blinders was set historically 1895-1908 (but the drama is set post war 1918)

and in both - the men wear their hats inside - which I find really weird as they didnt at the time
and stiff collars

and I was particularly impressed with the fin de siecle burlesque show scene (drag show) - I thought it must have been like that in the Weimar republic ( 1920s Germany). [clearly that would be Vienny blood]

Pukey Blinders - lots of scenes were just wrong -
In the scene where the master of the house is NOT butchered in the kitchens,
the chef is deboning a carcass - he wouldn't - he is an arteest- one of the kitchen hands would do heavy work like that. Our hero survives and bungs ten bob to one of the servants. None of the other servants say - "ere why he done dat den?" - and the lucky fellow takes it with bloodied hands.

oh and didnt you find all the telephone boxes in the middle of lettuce fields - - a bit limp? - and fields ploughed in straight lines though they were using horses

n polly shooting the girl with the accuracy of an SAS sniper although she only had a hand gun?

In Vienny Blood, the then current idea that psychoanalysis is a Jewish treatment for a Jewish disease is very well implied as an undercurrent. and the idea that various trades and professions were verboten to Jews ( medicine OK from 1840 ) but clearly the police dept didnt have any and didnt want any either.

nd the austro hungarian empire is a German empire but made up of many nations. The inspectors underling - straussman is a czech isnt he?

I'll def be watching the next two, especially as they'll both feature the rather gorgeous Jessica de Gouw as Amelia Lydgate.....
Oh sorry, having an andy-hughes moment there :)
// PP. He was shocking wasn't he ?//

the awful head of the medical school is based I think on von Jauregg

Freuds first paper is I think on the bipolar neurone of the retina. and he goes to Paree for Charcots teaching (hysteria) as C is head of neurology - psychiatry not invented yet.

von Jauregg is meant to have said - now that we have got the Hebrew (sic) out of the dept, things will be much better!

Freud said - as soon as we show hysteria is not confined to jewish women, the situation will improve

fella called Edward Jones ( Brit ) in 1906! established the committee in defence of Freud
[In this context in 1912 Jones initiated, with Freud's agreement, the formation of a Committee of loyalists charged with safeguarding the theoretical and institutional legacy of the psychoanalytic movement]
wiki takes the view it was to isolate Jung - but god these mad doctors were a mad lot

good prog
