Bat Or Moth?

Last night, I was sitting on the patio, in the dark, but the outside light was on so there was some illumination. On the table in front of me was a glass of Pinot Grigio. Out of the darkness came either a pipistrelle bat or a huge moth which landed on the rim of the glass. It gave me quite a start and I flapped my hands about and it took off.

What was it likely to have been a bat or a moth?

I could be wrong but I think it is more likely to have been a moth attracted by the light

The light was behind me on the wall, Toorak. It was at least five feet away from where I was sitting.

If it was a moth, it was a big 'un!
if it had been pinot noir I'd have said a blood-crazed vampaire bat. But a pipistrelle with a taste for pinot grigio is new.

I don't think it had time to sample the wine. My flapping hands saw to that.
I did pour the wine into clean glass though, just in case I caught something sinister.

I'm erring on the side of moth...

What sort of wine is that, DTC?
I wouldn't have thought it would be a bat. They swoop down when they drink - they can't land and take off again in an upward movement.

I didn't know that, 237. Moth it was then. A BIG moth.
Be one of the Hawk moths Tills. Some have a 4-5 inch wingspan.

Thanks, Togo. Perhaps I should have taken a photo rather than flapping about. :-)
it's actually a white wine...a grape used in champagne....(one of three) - Pinot Meunier, also known as Meunier or Schwarzriesling.

It's actually a variety of black wine grape......the Naturkinder, from across the border from Champagne, and not cheap at around £25 a bottle, if you can find it.
SJ, that sounds like me....// They swoop down when they drink - they can't land and take off again in an upward movement//

I would also be flat on my face....lol
British moths prefer real ale Tills, so your neck oil was quite safe from it. :))

Tune just for you Tills.

Aww! Thanks, Togo. I appreciate that. x

£ 25.00 per bottle? Only in a good restaurant, DTC.
I recon it was an elephant hawk moth......bliming huge!
///Some have a 4-5 inch wingspan//
you're lucky he didn't wrap his wings round the glass and make off with it
Aww Tilly you missed a chance to have a really good look at a fantastic moth. I had one in my house once, scared me half to death and as I ran away from it, it followed in my wake ! I actually managed to catch it in a glass and had a really good look at it before releasing it outside. Magnificent it was.
Bat or moth?

Stop yer hand flapping, allow it a sip of the good stuff.

You never know, it may have hung around and shared some awesome life stories.
