Corbyloon. Alright, banged to rights - although I did use the conditional 'they'd' not 'they'....
I just don't like my home phone number splashed around the internet (as it seemed Paypal was doing), and if was just an aberration, then I'd like to know why. I usually put in 0123456789 if people insist on a number, and if Paypal ARE giving mine out, they're now going to be giving out an old mobile that lives in a drawer and doesn't get turned on.
As it happens, we used to get plagued by unwanted phone calls, flogging us all sorts of crap. We signed up with the telephone preference service, which has helped a lot, and leave the phone on answerphone, which drives most of them away!

Mrs B is ultra-careful with such things. If you asked her the time, she'd want to know why you were asking.
She doesn't give out our phone number - scarcely wants to give out our address, except I tell her she has to if she wants things delivered here...
I've just emailed Paypal itself describing the problem and asking for their comments. Maybe it was just a one-off - maybe they'll come back and swear blind that Mrs B DID give out our number. I'll report back when they reply.

pedantic ? that nothing ! you havent heard what I have to say
altho I woiuld have no objection
they shouldnt because it is against the current data legislation that they use if for purposes they have not disclosed
they should have a data policy spelling this out
you may have checked a box saying - yeah give it to everyone....
the fact people ring you DOESN'T mean Paypal has given your number away
the people who ring me I assume have bought it on a list from a hacker ....

Just for the doubters round here (and strangely enough there are some) here is part of what Mrs Paypal said in her reply:
"I would recommend referring to our PayPal Privacy Statement, specifically "Do We Share Personal Data?". We may share information with another party for transactions when you use the Services, such as other Users, merchants, and their service providers. blah blah blah This could include a phone number."
So by agreeing to Paypal's T&Cs, you DO agree that they can give out your phone number to anyone they think necessary!
The best way (to save banging your head against walls) is to put in a phoney number of some sort - but as I said before, watch it, as they'll want to send you a validation code via text, so it has to be a valid phone number. In my case I'm lucky, having an unused old Nokia in a drawer, useful for such purposes.
