Went to use my business bank card yesterday to pay for an order. Was rejected. Rang bank. Turns out they had blocked my card because ‘someone ‘ , in 24 hours, had tried to pay for a hotel, flights with United Airlines, plus endless transactions with various websites!! Seeing as my bank card never leaves my sight I asked how on Earth this was possible! Was told that professsional scammers have a sophisticated method of scannining bank card/PIN numbers to get a match. Anyone ever heard of this??

He said he thought it said size 12.
Hi Smowball, I hope this sorts itself successfully. If you use internet banking please change your password today. And on any sites where you use this card regularly. Better to be safe than sorry.
hi smoochie !
word

well the answer is Yes you silly moo ! - - but you knew that from before. change all your passwords
something you should have done a few days ago
One of those contactless ones is it ? Do you use it on the Internet ? Via public WiFi ? Or maybe a lax retailer was scammed or had it's database security fail. Loads of possibilities.
go into the bank and discuss it
you may be advised to change account numbers

and when you do- simper and curtsey prettily and say thank god for the algorithms that identify abnormal buying activity
and thanks as you have lost nothing

happened twice to me - second time much easier
you know what to do and say

every month now I go froo every bank and CC transaction - some just take a little (£2) and then go for a bigger bite. i mean this is OK it is better than a small kid getting thro a window and taking your money and silver .....

Yes it’s contactless
I check my UK banks, my UK credit cards,my US bank, my joint account with Mr Cal and our joint credit card accounts every day, and I'm super careful where I spend on them and what sites I visit. It's really common for your cards to get cloned and the money is gone in no time.x
yes. It has happened to me twice on different cards. they don't need your card or pin or anything. They have a gizzmo that tries to make low value purchases by rapidly entering various number combinations until one works...then they know they have a live account. They then either use the details to buy saleable stuff or they sell the details on to another crook.
yes - happened to me several years ago. "Card" was used to buy petrol and for a long weekend in a local hotel. Had to attend police but bank paid me back.
It is awful but really common. I know loads of people who have suffered card fraud.
Bloody awful isn't it ?? Thank goodness the banks know when a fraud has been committed and will pay a person back. Never happened to me, but I live in dread of it happening.
way back in unsophisticated days, someone paid her mortgage bill with my card. Obviously not an attempted fraud, since they had her name and address, probably just a misheard number over the phone; yet still the bank let it through.

On other occasions the bank has spotted errors/scams itself and checked with me, eg when someone was spending big in NY with "my" card, so it's good to know their security systems do work... sometimes.
I don’t trust internet banking, but ones choices are limited. Severe penalties should be mandatory for those guilty.
He doesn't have internet banking and our saving account doesn't have contactless.
yes, both times I was scammed the company contacted me about the fraud....it was in the days before online account mnagement and customers could only see their accounts on paper once a month.
Have had this happen a couple of times, on both occasions it was quickly picked up by the bank. Last year I 'had booked lots of Uber taxis' in a very short space of time having never used one
