Apparently Ms. Fielding was a hugely respected and successful theatre performer, but her most famous film role effectively killed her career. She declined any future Carry On films to avoid typecasting, but that was exactly what happened, sadly.

I always remember her not for her Carry On appearance, but as they cheerful disembodied tanoy voice in The Prisoner. The way she said 'Good Morning Good Morning … ' managed to be simultaneously cheerful and creepy - not easy to do.

She's not the only actor whose career was effectively ended by playing one part. Harry H. Corbett (actually seen above with FF) had been a widely experienced and well-regarded Shakespearean actor, but hated that - as he saw it - Steptoe and Son ruined his career, and he ended up detesting Wilfrid Bramble, from whom he felt he could never escape.

Indeed - Mr Corbett always dreamed of wonderful theatre roles, probably Hamlet at Stratford, but the curse of 'Steptoe' dogged his career to the end.

I know I think about him every single time I turn anything dodgy down, makes me feel better. I might not get where I want to get career wise but I'll never be Harry H Corbett. Sad the same thing happened to Fenella fielding :(

I imagine that is something that all actors have to consider - weighing up the prospect of a role that guarantees work and money, but may manacle you to an image and destroy your career in the process.

I think some in that situation have accepted it with good grace - John Inman always said that someone shouted "I'm free!" at him at least three times a day every day, and he didn't mind, he simply accepted that this is what the public do.

Others, such as Ms Fielding, and of course Mr Corbett, and the ultimate example, Kenneth Williams, were not so fortunate.
