How will I stand regarding my moving from a 3 b/r house to a 1 b/r flat. I lived in this Council
house (for 56 years) and if I do not leave it totally clear when I leave the Council letter says they will charge me for a skip £153 plus an amount (roughly £75 + ). I booked a firm to shift all the surplus goods for me but unfortunately due to the snow etc they were unable to get onto the roads and now it is too late (I move on Mon. 5/3/18). The Council offices were closed because of the bad weather too.

I'm sure the council will give you some leeway on account of the weather, Julia. Ring them in the morning.
I'd also write them a polite letter of explanation, and keep a copy.
Your local newspaper may also be very interested if the Council are not helpful ...
I would ring the firm on Monday and ask when they have rescheduled you to, and then let the council know that due to the extreme weather, the house will be clear next Friday (or whenever) rather than this Monday.
You have done all you could but due to extreme weather conditions the help you had in place could not happen. Surely the council will be understanding especially after 56 years. Good luck.
Move hampered by “act of god”! As used in insurance policies.

Good luck

Thank you everyone, this is worrying me no-end as I wrote them a letter (not answered), e.mailed them re contradicting rules in their letter, and no reply, and now this. My daughter and partner tell me not to worry as they will fight my corner for me when the time comes , but opinions from a wider community do help.
Good luck with the move tomorrow, Julia. I hope it goes well.
How did it go, Julia?

The move did not go exactly to plan, Movers were hour late and then House clearance people did their best and arrived at the same time ! Spent the first night ' tuckered out' and lo and behold this morning no water! the the main burst in the kitchen and we had no idea where the tap was to stop it, Neighbours did not know either (turned out to be in road outside) Plumber could not arrive for 1 and half hours later, calls to all and sundry left us with a powerful gushing geyser that filled the kitchen with 2 inches of water which spilled over into the carpeted floors in hall, lounge and bedroom. It was a nightmare. Finally got someone to turn it off after about 40 minutes!. Called my daughter who was at work and they released her to get here and help mop up as much as possible and gradually during the day various council people have turned up with water vacuum, humidifiers, and the council men were all over the place.Apparently the pipe broke before the tap that turns it off (in the airing cupboard) They have now put in a whole new joint etc., but I am stuck with humidifiers for at least 24 hours !. Not a good move was it on my part!
Sorry to hear of all your troubles, hope you can dry out and get settled in.
What a nightmare - hope things settle soon.
I am so sorry to hear that. What a horrible two days you've had!

I hope things gradually get better for you.

Thank you for your comments, it is a lovely morning here, but have just received the news that my mobility scooter must not be parked near the building because of fire hazards, and batteries (of which I have 2) weigh 37lb each and have to be removed to charge up !) I am unable to do that so looks like I will have to down grade and change scooters. Yesterday was very poignant for me as it was my wedding anniversary and I lost my husband just on a year ago, but onwards and upwards surely it can only get better. ?
Can't see how it could get much worse unless Britain is wiped out by a meteor strike. Some day when you're 100 or so you'll look back on all this and laugh.
what a torrid time for you.
Keep a sense of humour if you can :-) xx

Thanks for your comment, that made me laugh, I normally can laugh quite easily.Certainly do not always look on the black side, but this move seemed doomed from the start. Oh well your laugh has raised my spirits, thanks very much
Sorry to hear of the terrible time you're going through at the moment Julia. I hope things improve quickly and you enjoy your new home.
Regarding your mobility scooter, does this mean it must never be parked near any residential property or just yours? Is this your local Council's ruling, and does it apply to everyone who has the same scooter all over your borough. Sounds dubious to me.
Julia, sorry to hear of your loss. You're having a hard time .. these are the times we feel a loss even more. Yes, it has to get easier. Hopefully we will get some warmer brighter weather to lift us. Best wishes for the future x

Yes ladybird it is a Government ruling apparently that mobility scooters must not be parked close to a property as they present a fire hazard. On reading my now local news I see that in Exmouth a big thing erupted over where they could/could not be parked. If you can use them indoors is that then NOT a fire hazard? Oh well, another day tomorrow.
