Does anyone know the best & cheapest way to obtain boxes for moving house? I want to start packing for our house move, but supermarket boxes are now crushed & would probably not be strong enough anyway.

Thanks

If you ask your local corner shop they may save tyou the boxes before they flatten them.  Although not terribly strong, they are ok for lighter items.

Other than that, we have one of those 'Jumbo Self Storage' places near to where I live and they sell boxes and packing materials at quite a reasonable price.  Is there one near to you?

I'm doing the same this week - and it's a nightmare getting hold of boxes. It depends really how far you're willing to go with it! you can buy good strong boxes from warehouses for about 2.50 each. I haven't done this - i've been snooping about at work for the past month and have managed to nab loads of big computer boxes etc. Try this if you can. Also let all your friends and family know you're looking! I'm sure you'll get loads.
Do you live anywhere near a fruit and veg. wholesaler?  When I moved I managed to obtain (for free) loads of fruit boxes which were really strong with carrying holes in the ends.  They were brilliant.        Happy moving!

Thanks for all the ideas, I will certainly look into the fruit & veg wholesalers. Anything FREE is always attractive!!
I went to my local Sainsbury and they were happy to let me have all the boxes I wanted because it meant they didn't have to flatten them and put them in the skip. Don't be afraid to ask, they can only say no. Banana boxes are good - very strong and decent sized, with lids.
look at www.removal-boxes.co.uk
Try a white goods retailer, they may have large cartons to dispose of.

Hello SuzySues, the problem with getting boxes from supermarket shops etc are they are normally not strong enough to hold your belongings and when stacked on top of each other can collapse. Unfortunately you will only find this out on the day and can add to the stress of moving.

Always buy double walled proper removal boxes as you can always use them as well for storage after your move. Also the larger boxes that you can buy are not really ideal for moving as people seem to overfill them and then cant move them. But if you do want to use them then only really use for bedding etc.

If you are moving house try a free website called www.helpiammoving.com they give you advice on how to pack boxes along with checklists, hints and tips, address card changes everything from advice on how to move with children to moving fish.
