When I was 15, I became a Christian (of the born again type). A few years later I discovered sex and alcohol and the rest, as they say, is history. But joking apart, I am currently rereading the new testament (just finished the 4 gospels) and I have to ask myself, how the hell did I get in to such a ridiculous belief system? Its potty from start to finish.
I can put it down to the inexperience of youth I suppose but how on earth do some people carry this nuttiness with them throughout their life?
When I was in the church I was often berated for been to questionative and not having enough faith. Looking back, it was my saving grace.

//Honesty means more than self deceit to me.//

Amen to that, Nailit.
Mr Powell was good and it was a great romp as I remember.
He wouldn't get past casting these days though, too white.

Somewhat the same as you - I was never berated, were you R
C? Tried 2ce to answer but computer forbids. I was never berated. Also lived a full life. Don't ask 'cos I WON'T TELL something hap-penned and I am so happy that I rediscovered belief - that is my saving grace :)
>>> I'd rather be a honest drunk than a deceived religionist

Possibly the most intelligent statement I've ever read in over a decade on AB!
They can't give you an answer. You're no allowed to ask awkward questions, you supposed to blindly believe.

What get me now, when talking to religionists (evangelicals, JWs etc) is how AFRAID they are to look at alternatives to their own belief system. Ive offered on many occasion to lend them my books by the likes of Richard Dawkins et al but they refuse to read them. They then accuse ME of been closed minded despite the fact that I'll gladly read anything that's offered by them.
Individuals who possess 'religion' are some of the most closed minded people you will ever encounter. Offer them proofs - evidence based on observation and/or logical arguments - and they reject them out of hand, then accuse others of the very thing they themselves are guilty of - closed mindedness.

Happens in politics too. But that's another debate.

I'm glad that you saw through the lies and false narratives. The world is a far more interesting place when you stop believing that there are fairies at the bottom of the garden.
You have nailed it. Congratulations.
