Why Don’t The Religious Ask Why?

Pondering the posts here, Goodlife quotes from The Watchtower or his preferred version of the bible, Theland quotes from anything that agrees with his own views at any given time (even the much despised Billy Graham organisation if it suits the purpose), Khandro quotes philosophers and those he regards as men of wisdom… and so on… but not one of them ever appears to have an independent thought. They accept it all ‘religiously’ without ever asking ‘Why?’

Why, for example, if God is, as we’re led to believe, omniscient/omnipotent/omnipresent, did he err? Why, if he knew what the outcome would be, did he create man and then regret it? Why (as Idiosyncrasy claimed the other day).did God give Satan permission to rule the earth when that sort of rule wasn’t what God wanted at all? To me none of it makes sense - so it makes sense to ask ‘Why?’ ... doesn’t it?

Why don’t you?

I did ask why to a few things many years ago as a teenager that went to CoE sometimes with my friends family, and all the answers I received both in books and from people didn't pass my own personal smell test so I just quietly stopped going. However it should be said that religion wasn't a large part of my life or identity, I had plenty of more enjoyable activities...

God is an experimental scientist. He's kicked-off life forms all over the universe and is watching them all evolve.
Very succinct naomi24.. Reading through R and S has done my head in. I shall go and lie in a darkened room and do battle with Bill.
Here is a why. If we are made in gods image why do I look different from Fu Yung next door ?
The answer is easy if you just orient yourself. :-)
To know completely the thoughts of God you would need to be God.
Some questions can be asked that are not sensible questions.
Could God create a rock so large he couldn't lift it?
Can God lie?
I believe God created us out of love. Yes he must have known we would mess up but He already had a plan for our salvation which had been worked out in eternity.
In my experience many people who claim to be "freethinkers" are nothing of the sort. I hear the same old tired anti Christian pro atheist arguments trotted out repeatedly. Atheist like Nailit rarely bring anything new to the party
I believe God lit the fuse that set off the big bang then stood well back. He has many things to occupy his mind apart from our petty concerns.

Interesting - in my experience, people who claim to believe in God are nothing like freethinkers either - everything they say harks back to scriptures which are only ancient writings - the perception that they are the word of God is put on them by believers.
naomi - You and I know from long and continuous experience on here, that one step into the bible starts the contradictions such as those you raise, and these are simply batted away by the fervents with a series of well-rehearsed pat answers which in reality are not answers at all.

It makes no sense because it moves to suit the argument being conducted, there is no firm base from which to argue or question, which is you and I, and a few others, have this endless pointless battle day in and day out.

I am sure the day will come when we will all run out of patience, and the will to live, and simply give up, but as long as we find intellectual stimulation, and a degree of satisfaction in raising questions, even if they are never answered, we will carry on.
Today, more and more people have attitudes like many political groups use violence to gain independence. It is common for people to fight about politics. And in many countries, people mistreat foreigners more and more. Just as the Bible foretold, people are “not open to any agreement” during these last days. (2 Timothy 3:1, 3)
What about true Christians, remain united while the world becomes more and more divided.
Well it says it all at (Isaiah 21:8) Yes, along with the modern-day watchman, you too can champion Bible truth.

Just a little bit more to make more confuse.

Yup - works for me!

Reading the responses from the religious here one could be forgiven for thinking I’d asked a different question. Not a single straight answer.

Fiveleaves,//To know completely the thoughts of God you would need to be God.//

Did you not understand the question? This isn’t about the mind of God - it’s about your mind. Why do you never ask 'why'?
It’s called faith, some of us do not feel the need to explain ourselves. I would never dream of asking an atheist to ‘ explain’ themselves .

anneasquith, no one, including you, is obliged to respond.
In my experience dedicated believers appear to place a premium on their belief over reason. The purpose behind practicing a religious belief appears to be reinforce the pretense that they already know. They seem to possess an often hidden awareness that those who do question their beliefs are in great peril of losing their faith. Many former believers will attest to that.
Many believers will have questions throughout their lives - not many would ask them on here I don't think.

Mamyalynne, this isn’t about asking questions on here. When I first examined the bible thoroughly I didn't ask my questions on here. I applied logic and questioned what I was reading.
I don't mean this to sound rude... it seems to me that people who don't want to openly ask or discuss it, are aware that they are on shaky ground. Even many who do, refuse to interact with genuine questions. I think there is an awful lot of doubt and people are scared of losing their faith.
Have you not learnt, I only have the mind of Christ.1 Corinthians 2:16,
True Christians only says and do what the Bible says, if they they don't then they are not true Christian simple.
