Must I put it on the windscreen? Because cars that come fitted have them where the radio is - so can I not mount it behind my gear lever where there is a space and a socket.

Thanks

If you mount it behind your gear lever you might find it has trouble picking up the signal from the satellites.

Would it pick up the Satellite Signals there?
You can buy a mount that will attach your satnav to one of the fans near the radio. Mine isn't in the window.
You don't want it too low down, as you would take your eyes off the road ahead too much.
Why don't you want it on the windscreen? If you're worried about it leaving a ring on the windscreen, which will attract thieves, fit it on the top of the dashboard. In the days when I had that sort of sat-nav I used velcro to fix something to the top of the dashboard to which I could attach the sucker of the sat-nav mount (ceramic tile/drink-coaster etc). As Hopkirk says, you want it as near to your line-of-sight as you can get it without interfering too much with your view of the road.
I bought one of these for my TomTom, so I can mount it on my dashboard:

Hoppy has it right here...why would you want to be constantly looking down to get your directions ?
You don't have to have it on the windscreen for one very good reason...ITS ILLEGAL! You should have nothing obstructing the 'swept' area of the windscreen with a few exceptions. I have seen people driving round with the satnav directly in front of their face on the screen. How the hell they see to drive I don't know. Why is everyone so obsessed with satnav's? Always see them being used in 'local' cars all the time. Don't people know their way to the shops yet?! (Rant over!)

It's not illegal to have them on the Windscreen unless they're they're in the swept area.
Read the second line.

I did, reread my post.

Pointless asking you, wasn't it?
My car (citroen) has a windscreen that is opaque to radio waves. The only place a satnav works is on the special hatched area around the rearview mirror.
