has anyone had experience of refusal and appealing? friends boyfriend got refused (drugs offences) and he's appealing but they are wondering whether to pay for legal services or just do it themselves - if you google it loads of companies come up, but they're wondering if its along the lines of the PPI companies?

can't see him getting it on appeal but they're going to try!

No personal experience but from posts on here an appeal takes months and very rarely succeeds. I saw one case where the appeal took 15 months and was still rejected.
The US are totally against letting people in who have any sort of drug record so you may be wasting your time.

It pleases me somewhat that people who do have drug offences do suffer in some way for their previous behaviour.

With holidays abroad seen as a perk nowadays I would like to see the courts able to remove a persons passport as part of a sentence.

So for example 3 years in prison and removal of a passport for 2 years after that.
I wouldn't want to go to a country that thought I wasn't good enough for them.

Like the previous answers, I think he has no chance in winning an appeal.

i can't see him getting past the appeal but she can't decide whether to employ one of these visa specialist companies to help

personally i think she will be throwing (more) money away by doing so
It would appear that ( and i'm not saying that is my opinion ) the only way to get into the USA , with a conviction , is not to declare it
There is nothing an 'appeal help' company can do that you can't do yourself.
They can only ask to have your case looked at again. It will just cost a LOT of money to be in the same situation. As said the US is very hot on drug offences , to be honest I think there is more chance of getting a visa with a conviction for assault than for a drugs charge.
Bazil once you apply for a USA visa and get refused they stamp your passport to say you have been refused. The trick is to not apply for the visa and just lie when you get asked about your record.
America has enough drug addicts by now, so I guess that is why they are not letting anymore in.
after todays events ( muslim being booted off a flight at the last moment ) I think he should throw the towel in and go somewhere else
If you are a guitar twanging warbler or skin basher with drugs connections it would seem entry to the U.S. doesn't pose a problem. So called celebrity status helps. The Americans love famous things in their country.
