in view of the predictable and current energy price hikes and bearing in mind the energy companies spend hundred of thousands of £ for "specialist weather forecasts", do you think they knew/know something we dont ?
or is it just plain old coincidental cynical greedy price hikes as an early xmas pressy for us all ?

Janice Long always has an extended chat with the weather guy who appears on her Radio 2 show each morning at around 1.20am. Last night she asked him, on behalf of a listener, what he thought about that Express report warning of dire weather conditions ahead. He started his responses with the words "How can I answer that without being rude?" and then went on, at considerable length, to totally rubbish the Express's prediction. (If anything, temperatures across the next few months are likely to be somewhat warmer than average, according to the Met Office).
This is a quote from one of these 'long range weather services'
Every so often these guys ship out press releases predicting extreme weather in long term forecasts.
They're basically using these to advertise their consultancy businesses
Occasionally they're right often they're wrong
I think it was the year before last Tesco listened to them and they had snow shovels in the shops for months during lots of warmer than average weather
Eventually we got some snow and I'm sure they were happy to say 'See were right (if a little late)'
I don't think there's much independent evidence that they're particularly accurate
But feel free to say 'I told you so' in 6 weeks time

these specialist meterological companies arent accurate in the way jo public wants a forecast.
but to the multitude of companies who use them to base production and demand, eg ice cream companies, utilities etc etc then they do tend to give them the edge and in tha sense they are more accurate, because they are more specific and finite, like the shipping forecasts, and weather prediction pilots/ailines use

The weather forecast doesn't really make any difference. They'd be putting the price up whatever.
It's an unofficial cartel. They don't actually sit round and agree price rises between themselves by direct communication - that would be illegal. They just all stick to the same unspoken game plan. Someone goes first and imposes a price rise, and everyone else follows suit by the same amount. As long as they all stick to the plan and follow suit in a short space of time, they're all quids in with no need for competition.

This is a report from the Daily Express, not the first newspaper that comes to mind when you think of deep, incisive, investigative reporting. A newspaper that puts ever stranger stories about the death of Diana on its front page, several times a week. Its the UK equivalent of the US National Enquirer, which still insists that Elvis is alive and well and working in a Walmart in Arkansas. If they had consulted the Met Office, then they would have been unable to link the two elements of "the worse winter for decades" with "price rises for gas and electricity". The Met Office will tell you that there is no accuracy to be found in weather forecasting more than a couple of weeks away, let alone months away.
The report comes from Vantage Weather Services, and if you look on its own website. there is no mention of "the worse winter for decade" ::::

The privatised gas and electric companies exist to make as much money for their, mostly foreign, shareholders as possible. That is their only purpose. We shouldn't be surprised by this...that is the way that companies like this work. They are not charities. That is the reason shareholders invest in these companies, not to make sure that OAP's don't die of the cold this winter. They will put their prices up as much as they can, and these percentage prices rises are reflected later in the year in increased profits that they will announce. Price rises are the only way that they can make any profits at all. Of course, they will deny any connection between price rises and profit increases, but to quote a certain Mandy Rice Davies, they would, wouldn't they ?
So, yes baz...you are right here...cynical and greedy in the extreme. They are effectively operating a cartel.
