Is it possible to get an emergency passport from the airport if you have all documents with you such as birth certificate etc?

You obviously have an urgent problem The only way to solve it is to get in touch with the Passport Service This page will give you some details about urgent applications http://www.ukpa.gov.uk/_3_urgent/3_contents.asp

tried this, it will take a week to get a lost passport replaced

They won't do it, no exceptions. If you've lost a passport then it'll take a week for all the security checks for a replacement. They can't cut the time down, you're out of luck.
I'm not sure if it's changed but I got a passport in 5 hours once, you have to be at the passport office when they open, you have to be traveling within the next 24 hours and have all the Documents with you, including travel doc's (i.e. plane tickets). Hope this is of help
