As I can’t renew my passport at the moment unless it’s an emergency will there not be problems with backlogs once it’s up and running? And when will that be? Hoping to fly in the new year though nothing booked as yet as would like to have new passport before I do.

its taking longer but I can't see anywhere asking you not to apply.
Renewed hubby's passport successfully and did not wait long either.
Who says you cannot renew???
Strangely enough, I am doing that right this very minute.....
The website is hanging a bit (it thought my postcode didn't exist, either) but apart from it being suggested that *if* your renewal isn't urgent, it may be an idea to wait a while so that those with an urgent need can be seen to in a timely manner, there is no bar to applying.

When I started my online application it did suggest that I applied at a later date while they dealt with urgent applications first.Thats what made me think should I wait? I’ll just go ahead then.
Like many other organisations, the Passport Office needs to shape up. This nonsense has been going on for almost six months now and it is scandalous that they simply carry on providing third rate service. If they are to carry on "social distancing" or whatever else they are doing they need to organise themselves so the provide a proper service.
