I am thinking of cancelling my subscription to Sky+ and the HD option. Can anyone tell me if the box will still work on free channels (obviously no Sky channels) and will I get the free HD channels?
Oh, and will the box still be able to record? TIA...Dagman

Doubt if if you will still be able to record
if if??
The box won't record without a subscription.

You'll be able to receive these channels:

Sky might try to convince you that you'll need a 'Freesat from Sky' viewing card, for a one-off fee of £25. You can ignore that advice as a viewing card is only needed to receive encrypted 'Free to View' channels (of which there are hardly any) and not non-encrypted 'Free to Air' channels. Your old card should do the job anyway.

I'd miss the record facility! Ok how about if I drop the HD pack, will the HD free to view still work? Thanks
Yes, we have the HD box but no HD subscription.

I get BBC1 HD, Channel 4 HD etc (but not E4 HD and obviously not Sky One HD)

So it was as if we had a normal Sky Plus box.

The only 'bad' thing is that for some reason all the Sky Anytime programs are HD programs - which it won't let you play, so Sky Anytime is pretty much useless - didn't bother us as we never use it anyway.
I cancelled my Sky contract in August last year (30 days notice). We have 2 Sky+HD boxes(Multiroom) without any extra payment we are enjoying Sky Freesat programmes which include HD progs(the only difference you will find is that the Sky+ facilities no longer work which means you do not have the hard drive record & playback, however I have my DVD Recorder connected & can record one prog at a time from the Sky box. Hope this is of help to you. Ron.

thanks all for your replies, looks like the best option for me is to keep the package but cancel the hd. cheers.
why would you cancell the HD ? I still get the HD channels through the box on Freesat. Ron.

the HD pack is £10 a month, if what above is true, if I stop the Sky HD pack I will still get the free HD channels. Sky HD doesn't have anything special for me, when I first got Sky HD it had Eurosport HD and MTV HD which I viewed but they decided to take those away and the rest of their HD channels I don't watch. I will still subscribe to Sky though just not the HD they offer.
I'm not sure you can get Sky and Freesat at the same time,if you cancel H/D & just receive Sky basic channels you obviously will not get H/D. If however you cancel sky altogether you can then receive Sky freesat through the Sky+H/D box including H/D channels, you will not however be able to use the Sky+ facilities of record & playback. I got over this by linking my DVD Recorder to the Sky+ box with a scart lead & recording 1 Freesat channel at a time. Ron.

There are differences of opinion here then. Mebs I should just phone Sky and see what they say about what I'd be left with if I do stop the HD, though they may not be helpful in order for me to stay put. It's a tenner I could do with at the mo!
