A few days ago the free space on my C drive went from 14 gb to 3 gb, even though all of the folders in the drive add up to what they were originally. Can anyone help explain where this memory has gone? thank you

Sounds a bit odd. Try searching for temporary files (search for TEMP from the start menu) and delete the files inside if you don't need them any more. You could also try searching for files larger than a particular size, say 100MB, and identify whether you need them or not.
This could be to do with your virtual memory settings. Virtula memory takes up space on your hard drive so that files can be quickly accessed instead of being 'fetched' form the storage. GO to control panel then system then advanced and then performance settings it should tell yout here somewhere how much virtual memory is being used of the hard disk, don't change it unless you knwo what your doing, if it isn't high or the amount of memory youve lost then im not sure right now what it is
