PC Memory Problem

I am not a computer "techie" and so hope that someone out there can help! My standard Dell PC appears to have two memory drives, C & D. C Drive is (or appears to be functioning properly and has masses of memory free. The second Drive is labelled "Backup D", has 18.4Gb capacity but only 2.7Gb free space. This Drive contains a single folder called Norton Ghost Backups and within that are 12 Files of a type called IV2I or just V2I. Three of these files alone account for 13.5Gb of capacity used. I have not been able to open any of the files to see what is in them.
Is it safe to delete these files on the grounds that I have never accessed them and therefore do not understand their purpose? Are the contents simply duplications of other files/folders that I have on the C Drive?
I believe that the amount of memory space used here is contributing to the way that my printer is now behaving (incredibly slow) and other slow actions like internet connection.
Many thanks for any help/advice offered.

They are (as the name implies) backups of your system, you can delete them and it won't cause a problem, I'd suggest it might be prudent to copy them onto a couple of DVDs first though, just in case you have a problem in the future.

That said, having a full D drive will not cause you any problems of the type you are mentioning.
Further to Chuck's post.
I assume you have Norton Ghost installed on your machine. Has this been set up to do automatic regular backup. If it has then these files may reappear.
> I am not a computer "techie"

Nor was anyone on their first day! However, it might be useful for you to know that your PC's memory is not the same as your PC's hard disk capacity.

The hard disk is where the computer stores its files - think of it like a filing cabinet in an office. However, when your computer needs to do something with those files (e.g. maybe you want to edit a spreadsheet), it needs to copy then off the hard disk and into its memory. Just like in a real office, you can't work on a file while its stored in the filing cabinet, so you need to take it out of storage and open it on your desk so that you can read it and work with it...
I would leave these files on your D drive.

They are used in case you need to restore Windows in the future if it fails. Doing a restore from these files will probably be quite easy.

Doing a full install of Windows WITHOUT these files will be very difficult for a non-techie.

Leave these files alone.
If Ghost is functional on your system and you d ot 'really' need the space, keep it. It will get you out of trouble sooner or later when you need to reload the OS.
hi,there.:)
2 ways to go 4 u:
1> uninstalling the Norton,if u do save some more space in Drive D,then try some other antivirus-software,such as the spywareremovaltoolkit, the AVG,and so on.remember to backup the OS again.
2>reinstalling the OS, cut the Drive C into a smaller part.before it,u put yr important file, data into yr Mobile Hard disk, and u can also upload them onto the attachment of the emails.
helpful for u!good luck!
