I bought some cheap DVDs in Thailand (yes I know ... ) but I have bought them before with no trouble However I now have a new DVD player - Panasonic DMR EX98V and I can't play the DVDs. I get a window saying 'Incompatible TV System Setting'. Is it my DVD player, or the fact I am in England, or what ?

You need a multi-region unlock, I expect. Some can be entered with the remote, selecting Region code 1 (multi) Some need hard-unlocking. Google to find out! Remote unlocking you may find free.
I dread to think what these DVDs from Thailand contain! ;-)

In what way, squarebear ?
They're probably just pirated copies of mainstream films squarebear, nice, cheap and providing a valuable source of income for the criminals in Asia
Put them in your PC DVD drive and see if they will play – you could also explore the drive and find out what file type is on the disks.

You will recall that I advised you to try before buying, to check out the quality of the goods.

I'm not really too bothered as I didn't expect a good quality of film anyway. Hymie, the stalls where I bought the DVDs don't let you try before you buy !! I wondered if it was just that the REgion is different.
It will be that the region is different. Panasonic are notorious for having no unlock codes easily available. Only one I've ever seen (I googled it some time ago) was about £20 ! Otherwise, Panasonic are the BEST ! :o)

Have to switched the pal (?) over - its a slide lever.

Is it OK to change the Region over, and try this 'pal' thing - I don't want to make anything go wrong - I've just bought this DVD player and it was very expensive ! Couldn't resist a bargain in Thailand though ...
there's one at the bottom of this page, I don't know if it works; in fact I don't even understand it but it might make sense if you actually have a Panasonic
