I recently got myself a HD camcorder! I wanna find some really good HD video editing software but have no idea what to look for - ive found like the most popular but dont wanna buy if they turn out to be too complicated.

its a panasonica full HD camera - the software provided by panasonic is crap - it converts the files from *.mtd to *.avi but at a stupidly low resolution that clearly isnt HD at all - it lets me convert to *.mpg but still not at a HD standard.

i bought a peice of software from the net called iskysoft, which is a video converter - this is exellent, it lets me take the *.mtd files and convert them to WMV HD files (in full HD resolution)

to edit these files and make my own movie files im currently using windows movie maker - which is brilliantly simple - however seems to struggle with my HD files when editing. I have a brilliant PC that can cope with next gen gaming titles yet movie maker struggles so badly to make a 5min video in HD. (i have 4GB Ram vista 32bit, intel core 2 duo extreme processor and 4870 HD x2 graphics cards)

im looking for software that lets me edit mtd files or WMV HD files, that runs smoothly and works efficently - isnt too complicated and difficult for a beginer and lets me still add effects, cut video sections etc.

id be so grateful for any help this is my new hobby and im addicted to filming stuff in HD! lol :P

4GB is wasted to an extent with 32-bit OSes. You'll only be making use of about 3GB.

I can recommend iMovie very highly (about the best non-pro movie editing software available), but that's for Mac OS X only.
You could try Wondershare Video Converter Platinum, It is the best HD video converter and AVCHD video converter which can convert HD video and AVCHD video to avi, convert m2ts to avi, convert mts to avi, convert ts to mp4 etc.. with excellent quality. When I got my first home computer about 20 years ago it came with Pinnacle Studio video editing software. I've upgraded it a couple of times to cope with a change of computer operating system and then to allow me to produce BluRay discs. I use a Panasonic camera to produce AVCHD files and Studio will deal with them and produce HD DVD discs and many other formats. I produce discs with a whole year's video on them and Studio will allow me to insert a menu, which will allow me to jump to any day's filming I wish (I don't know of any other software which will do this). You can also insert titles, move scenes around to change the order, add music and/or voice-over and even move the soundtrack from one clip to another one.
You can download a copy, which you pay for, but you have a month to try it and get a full return if you don't like it, so it's worth a try.(I tried a more recent version than mine and didn't like it as much - the refund was quick and painless).
It's not cheap but will produce excellent quality video directly from your AVCHD files, so worth a try.
