Find some else that you pay your line rental to. Virgin are one, but most providers will still leave you to rent your line from BT. At the best, you're only giving them a tenner a month and everything else goes to someone else

As it is, BT own all the lines anyway, (except for in Hull) they just rent them to other people like Virgin, so if your line has a problem. it's still BT who have to fix it.
I am in same position and sympathise.
My son moved to a new flat at the start of February and has been trying to get BT to tranfer his account from his last address and is still waiting. We have made numerous calls to BT and they have made numerous promises back ,but he is still waiting, but meanwhile he is still paying for his broadband and not being able to use it . We know how you feel, and if it isn`t fixed by Monday he`s going over to Virgin like myself. I`ve been with Virgin (previously NTL) for 2 years and never had any problems. (Yet)
What are the problems? At least with BT you actually get someone on the other end of the line.
ive been with virgin (or telewest as it was before) for about 4 years now and ive not had any problems with them at all. Theyre the only ones i know that dont specify having to have a bt line
Check to see whether you are in a cable area, cable broadband is so much faster than adsl, and you can have your phone and tv via cable as well.

thanks shylock73, it seems your son is having same problems as me. We moved into rented property in july and only just managed to get a phone line connected in Dec. In the meantime it meant endless expensive phone calls ( via a mobile)and holding on for ages. When i did manage to speak to a human, I would quite frequently be cut off and then have to restart the whole process again.
We finally got connected in Dec and then in Jan found our phone number had been given to someone else!! We received a bill this morning which includes phone calls to Australia! Wish me luck in trying to get a refund!!
I love bt ... for the same reason as bigeye.
got to admit ... it's not so much that they are better ... they are just not as bad.

the only sure alternative method is cable ...
all the rest still use BT's local loop .... so if you do have problems the first move is to bog you off to get BT's stuff checked.

I've been with Toucan about 3 years now. They use BT line and charge 8.99 line rental. My broadband package gives me up to 8mbs plus free weekend phone calls to UK landlines for 14.99. I can download as much as I like outwith the hours 6pm to 11pm, 7days a week. There is a Fair Usage Policy (FUP) for 6-11pm which is explained in section 7.6 at

Hope this is helpful.
If you want to complain to BT, the nest way to do it is via email. Their customer service department is in India and as such is next to useless, you may get to talk to someone, but they won't know how to sort your problem out if it's not on their list of prompts.

The times I've complained via email have bought results much more quickly than when I complained via phone

Thanks Cakeboy, I have tried sending a letter with good old pen and paper, and sent an email but no response received - not even acknowledged receipt!
Hi madmumof3, There has been some interesting replies to your ??s and if my son hasn`t got sorted out to-morrow as promised I shall try the e-mail idea. bt.com/welcome and then let you know how things go. Good luck to you also.lol
