virgin media basic broadband should be sufficient for your needs
I would agree with poohshunny if youre already with virgin dial-up, transfer to their broadband service. Large mail items wont take so long to receive and browsing will be much quicker.

I upgraded from virgin dial-up to their broadband because virgin were doing a deal (it was cheaper to have broadband) not sure if they are still offering this.
On the broadband newsgroup, the general consensus seems to be that Plusnet offer a reliable service for 9.99, and have UK-based support.
Not sure if you are cable or phone line for your connection.

If you are on cable go with Virgin broadband.

The great thing about cable is that no matter how far you are from the exchange the signal does not drop in speed or quality.

With what you are doing I would go for the lowest speed (2Mb?), you can always increase it at a later date.

I have Virgin Media on cable at 20Mb.
Another one to consider is Sky if you already have their TV service, their lowest broadband package is free if you have the TV. If you only browse the net and check your emails, you should be fine
